When you photograph children, you need the endurance to do all sort of body movements.  It is equivalent to running uphill, giving you the perfect cardiovascular exercise.

Meet sisters Tara and Martina.

I enjoy photographing these two.  Two very different personalities. I had to follow them around and play referee.  When I photograph children I keep in mind not to pose them (I think I’ve mentioned this already). It just doesn’t work for me.  However, I do guide them to a spot where the light is magnificent. I use a toy as my bait and then that is when I shoot away.  That part when their attention is consumed by something else — a passing airplane, a crawling insect, a new toy, a song, or their mom’s melodious encouragement.

I have a thing for in between moments.  A crossing of emotions or a change of expression.  From this to that.  THAT is what I want to photograph.

However, there are instances when children are not in that photo session moment.  I don’t try to talk them out of it.  It just won’t work.  It is also important that they are well rested – napped, fed, changed.

The best time is always in the afternoons.  The more toys and colorful clothes, the merrier.  These are usually items that are familiar to them.  It helps to bring out the natural vibe of the photos.
