I

I met this little man last Friday.  His parents are musicians.  Mom sings while dad plays the guitar.

I shoot happy when I do not feel the pressure from parents.  When I don’t hear them coach their child to smile. Sadly, some would give them a look that says — smile or else. I find child/ baby sessions much more challenging than shooting adults.  Their moods can change unexpectedly.  Parents often expects their babies to sleep thru a session.  Come session time, they are wide awake.  Plans change as often as their mood changes.  They dictate the feel of the shoot.  Nothing can’t be forced.

I’ve been asked how many hours for a baby shoot.  I always tell parents, it depends on your baby.  I let them be during sessions.  Please let them be! I let toddlers roam around.  I run after them.  It is impossible to ask them to stay put.  Their emotions are more evident when they do their thing – run, play, jump, etc.  A month old baby sleeps well after feeding them.  They have to be asleep to achieve those cute little newborn poses (if that is what you are aiming for).  But I always tell parents that they have to be in the frame or present during sessions because they are key to make the child comfortable too.  The last frame has to be with the parents.

Thoren has the gift of smile.  We played peekaboo.  I hid behind the camera and made funny noises.  I think mommies knows how by heart.

Let them drool. A child does not have to look polished during sessions.  My aim is to make it as real as possible.
